The study environment is a high priority at the Department of Linguistics. We stress the importance of good facilities for students such as libraries and reading rooms.
Linguistics and Finnish are relatively small disciplines: there are approximately 100 active students in Linguistics and 10-15 students in Finnish. This means that most people know each other and this contributes to creating a stimulating study environment.
Students have their own room, Lingoland, which is used for relaxation, study, parties, film shows, and Friday bars.
The guest lectures provide students with the opportunity to develop their appreciation of the discipline, as well as social relations.
Students who start with their BA in Linguistics are assigned to a personal “mentor” from the advanced students or the permanent teaching staff. During their first year, students meet with their mentor a few times to discuss how their studies are proceeding. The student counsellors also play an important role in informing students about the study programmes and about their rights, opportunities and obligations. They also advise and counsel students who have questions or problems.
